Founder of Microsoft (View Profile)
Computers have existed for centuries, but only in recent decades computers became small and compact. Despite of the decrease in size, the processing speed and power of these gadgets surpass the early models of computers. The success of desktop computers and laptops has resulted in a large amount of money to the ingenious minds that created them.
One of those geniuses who pioneered the computer is William Henry Gates III, more popularly known as Bill Gates. Bill Gates founded Microsoft with his friend Paul Allen. Gates was the CEO of the company and an expert in software.
Other than work at Microsoft, he was involved with many other things. He authored various books about technology and business and active in philanthropy via the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This Foundation, which he and his wife founded, was created for the promotion of education and technology to solve the world problems. He has donated billions of dollars to the Foundation.
They created their Foundation when he learned how Rockefeller and Carnegie created their own foundations. Gates’ mission was to solve the problems in the world which are often ignored by the government. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is involved in various educational support programs. It promotes a K-12 College Ready curriculum which provides students who will attend university with enough skills to survive the day-to-day college experience. The Foundation also assists students to gain higher education like professional certificates or college degrees. It provides scholarships for deserving but financially-challenged learners.
Bill Gates engages in other educational efforts such as conducting lectures and presentations for academic and school events that request his expertise. He has an online education initiative, which he obtained by purchasing the rights to the Character of Physical Law which was part of the Messenger Lecture Series in 1964. Those videos can be viewed online through Project Tuva of Microsoft.
Gates visited the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to discuss dealing with world problems. He spoke to many students and encouraged them to take action and responsibility to improve the world towards a brighter future. He particularly emphasized that wealth is not all about having billions of dollars but about giving back, the process of helping others and make a difference.
Other than his foundation and Microsoft, he also has other investments such as Cascade Investments, Corbis, Terra Power and bgC3. Cascade Investments is a privately-owned holding company that manages more than half of the assets owned by Bill Gates. Corbis is an image rights service that provides licenses for digital pictures and visual media. Terra Power is a company that focuses on nuclear reactor design. bgC3 is a company that focuses on research and development.
Because of Microsoft’s enormous success, Bill Gates became the richest man in the world, although this title was recently overtaken. As the second wealthiest man, Bill Gates has a net worth of US $66 billion.
