Carlos Slim Helú was born on January 28, 1940. He is a Mexican businessman, investor, and founder of several charities. Slim has been rated by Forbes as the richest person in the world since 2010. His extensive holdings with a wide array of Mexican firms include Grupo Carso, SA de CV. He has a concentrated interest within the fields of communications, technology, retail, and finance.
Presently, he is the Chairman of telecommunications firms Telmex and América Móvil. América Móvil was founded in 2010 and is Latin America’s largest mobile-phone carrier. It accounted for approximately US$49 billion of Slim’s wealth by the end of 2010.
Carlos Slim and his siblings were taught basic business principles from their father. At the age of 12, Slim bought shares in a successful Mexican bank. At the age of 17, he got two hundred pesos per week by working for his father’s company.
Carlos Slim began his career as a retailer in North America. He maintained good work ethics and eventually acquired his own successful brokerage, a firm that later grew to include construction, production, retail and restaurants.
In 1965 he incorporated Inversora Bursátil. In 1966, Carlos already had a net worth of US$40 million. He supported Inmobiliaria Carso. Three months later he married Soumaya Domit Gemayel, the name Carso were derived from their primary names – the first 3 letters of Carlos and also the first2 of Soumaya. The couple remained married until her death in 1999.
On March 29, 2007, Carlos Slim surpassed Warren Buffet as the world’s second richest person with cash assets estimated at $53.1 billion compared to Buffet’s $52.4 billion.
On August 4, 2007, the Wall Street Journal ran a story about the life of Carlos Slim. The article stated that, “”While the market price of his stake is publicly listed, some firms may decline at any time; at the instance that he’s most likely wealthier than Bill Gates””. In step with The Wall Street Journal, Carlos Slim credits part of his ability to discover business opportunities early through the writings of his friend, futurist author Alvin Toffler.
On August 8, 2007, Fortune Magazine, stated that Slim had overtaken Gates as the world’s richest man. In March 2011, Forbes explicitly stated that Slim had maintained his position as the wealthiest person in the world, along with his fortunes worth $74 billion. In December 2012, in step with the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Carlos Slim Helú remains the world’s richest man with a net worth of $78 billion.
