This week Microsoft (MSFT) announced it acquired a friendly of Owler, Acompli for $200M (congrats guys!). Acompli is a productivity app that specializes in streamlining email. The acquisition marks the 9th this year for Microsoft, and seems to be another offensive strike in the battle for a stronghold of the cloud productivity-space. The deal comes nearly a month after Microsoft began offering access to Office-365 for free and announced a partnership with Dropbox that connects Microsoft users directly into the Dropbox’s cloud storage system. Acompli actually directly competes with recent Dropbox acquisition, Mailbox, but it has a competitive advantage against Mailbox in its attachment access system. This advantage seems to fit with Microsoft’s aim to develop a online productivity systems that rivals Google’s Drive while also enabling seamless integration with other cloud-based productivity systems available.
