You’ve got questions about the basics, eh? Well, find some answers below! This page is dedicated to explaining what Owler is and how it works.
What is Owler?
Owler is a competitive intelligence platform that works a lot like Wikipedia. We have 12M+ company profiles and anyone can go on and both fill in data or information on that company and/or give their opinion on certain things like a CEO Rating, an estimate for a private company’s revenue or number of employees. No one ‘owns’ a company profile – it is all open. We do have checks in place to make sure no one is abusing the system, but it is all crowdsourced.
We also have several valuable email products that work a bit like Google Alerts on steroids. When you tell us where you work and what other companies you might be interested in, we send you a Daily Snapshot of the top news on those companies, a Weekly Showdown comparing your employer to its top competitors, and Instant Insights which are valuable and timely deep dives into major events like acquisitions or funding announcements on the companies you care about. You can get all of that for free, just by signing up (providing your email address and your employer name).
What is a company profile?
A company profile is an online profile of your company. It’s one way we collect and archive data for you and Owler members who are interested in your company to access anytime. A profile includes all the key information we source about a company, including: competitors, headquarter location, revenue, headcount, founding date, as well as information about the company status. Additionally, we include tabs in the Profile which provide in-depth intelligence on competitors, funding and acquisitions, as well as an archive of news and blog posts.
Where does Owler get its information?
Owler gathers and stores information from a variety of places. We like to think of our approach to data as two-pronged. The primary way we gather information is through crowdsourcing data. Owler members vote on our data and contribute opinions on CEO Ratings and Likely Outcome. We also source information through news articles, publicly-available government documents, press releases, and company-produced documents and sites like blogs.
Why does my company have an Owler profile?
Your company most likely has a profile because someone, at some point in time, was looking for info on your company. We also add companies to Owler when an event prompts us to do so. Such events might include: 1) news about a company 2) a company received funding 3) an Owler member requests that the company be added to our database.
Can I request Owler remove my company’s profile?
Since all of the information on Owler is publically-sourced, our policy is that we don’t remove company profiles. However, we’re absolutely committed to ensuring the data about a company is accurate. Of course, if we mistakenly added a profile that is not a corporation, we’ll remove it. We will also remove logos, CEO pictures, and website screenshots upon request.
How do I edit a company’s information on Owler?
If you come across a company profile that is incomplete or displays data you believe is inaccurate we’d love to work with you to ensure it is fixed. We invite you to edit the data yourself. Editing the data yourself tends to be the quickest solution. To edit the data in a profile you need to register with Owler. Simply visit www.owler.com to register. As soon as you confirm you’ll email address you’ll be able to edit data on any profile. Simply click the “Update this Profile” button at the top of any company profile. Why do you need to register? Primarily because there are bots out there that do like to crawl our data. Ensuring you’re a human like us prevents that! It also helps us keep members accountable for the accuracy of the data they provide. If you are looking to update your Industry or Sector please email us, as this is not editable right now.
Alternatively, you may email us at email@example.com to make a change. Please describe the specific data points that are inaccurate, or if it is a link, please include it.
Can my company own its profile on Owler?
Currently, we do not support company-sponsored profiles because the site is open for editing, much like Wikipedia. However, we’d love for you to monitor your company’s data. As long as you are registered, you can keep tabs on changes made to a profile and of course correct as needed.
Curating your profile on Owler can be a great way for your business to showcase positive aspects of your company, for instance growth in revenue or headcount. Additionally, Owler is a great way for brand loyalists to stay connected with your company – since Owler sends out the latest news and alerts, your loyalists can read instantaneously about a big product launch or marketing campaign. Just encourage your customers to follow you on Owler for the latest information about you, and you won’t even have to lift a finger.
If you’re concerned that the data on some profiles might lose accuracy if voted on by others we recommend inviting others to vote on the data. Owler data is generated based on the number of votes; more votes on a piece of data will increase the relevancy of that data and make it more likely to be displayed.
How Does Owler Ensure the Accuracy of Its Data?
Owler has an awesome team of data quality researchers. Any time an update is made to a piece of non-subjective data on our platform they verify the update.
Our researchers will locate a source that confirms the inputted data before the data appears on any company profile. For example, if you update the headquarter information for a company, one of our researchers will verify this data before the profile is updated.
If you make an edit to our data and receive a notice that the update was not approved, this is either because the researchers were unable to confirm your data or they found the data to be inaccurate. If you received such a notice from us but know your data is accurate, great. Please let us know! We’d love to learn about that. Contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org
